Newton police were engaged in a brief manhunt after a group of juveniles abandoned the scene of an accident Thursday in downtown Newton.

A Newton police officer tried to pull over a vehicle in the area of Sixth and Main streets for an incorrect tag, said Lt. Eric Murphy of the Newton Police Department.

The vehicle took off for about a block before running into a storage shed in an alley near Sixth and Main streets.

Four or five juveniles jumped from the car and scattered.

One of the juveniles was taken into custody at the scene.

All but one of the other juveniles were located a short time later in the area.

The juveniles were taken into custody but later released to their parents.
