Rose Hill hit three of four free throws and a shot at the buzzer in the final 20.1 seconds of regulation to break a 41-41 tie and claim a 46-41 win over Olathe Northwest Friday in the consolation semifinals of the Newton Invitational.

Rose Hill, 8-1, was led by Kelsey Webber with 18 points, followed by Whitney Bates with 10.

Northwest, 1-10, was led by Rebecca DeGroot with 13 points and Amber Ramsey with 10. Northwest missed two front ends of one-and-bonuses in the final 30 seconds of regulation.

A Mackaela Carter trey at the first quarter buzzer put Northwest up 15-8, but Rose Hill responded with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter. Northwest pulled back on top at the half, 22-20.

Rose Hill held the lead briefly in the third quarter, but Northwest pulled ahead 33-31 the end of the period.

Northwest plays at noon for seventh place. Rose Hill plays at 2 p.m. for fifth place.

After two close losses at Ravenscroft Gym this season, the Dodge City Red Demon girls finally pulled away a win, stopping rival Garden City 59-48 Friday in the consolation semifinals of the 34th Newton Invitational.

Dodge City improves to 8-3 and faces Rose Hill in the consolation finals at 2 p.m. today (the game may start early depending on the finish of the noon game). Garden City, 5-6, plays Olathe Northwest at noon for seventh place.

Valerie Ortiz led Dodge City with 18 points, followed by Brenna Briggs with 14.

Carly Schmale led Garden City with 16 points. Paula Gonzales scored 12.

Garden City outscored Dodge City 15-6 from the free throw line. Dodge outscored Garden 15-3 from 3-point range.

Tied 24-24 at the half, a 16-3 third quarter was the difference for Dodge City.

Semifinals

Andover Central 63, Salina South 47

Andover Central reached the finals of the Newton Invitational for the fourth straight season, pulling away from Salina South in the second half for a 63-47 win.

Tiffany Bias led 12-0 Central with 33 points. Taylor Goodness scored 13 for 8-3 South. Sally Thompson added 10 points.

Bias is in third place in all-time scoring, five points behind Wichita West’s Tina Wilson for second and 55 points behind Wichita Southeast’s Kareema Williams. Her performance was the fifth-best single game performance in the tournament.

South took an early 9-6 lead, but Central ended the first quarter on an 8-2 run. South regained the lead in the second quarter, but Central ended the half on an 11-2 run capped by a Kimberly Chamberlin half-court shot at the buzzer, giving the Jaguars a 31-24 lead.

South got within one in the third quarter. Central pulled away by nine by the end of the period, 46-37. Bias opened the fourth quarter with a trey, sparking an 8-0 run.

South plays today in the third-place game.
