The games will go on

In case of inclement weather, the Newton Invitational Tournament will continue according to an e-mail sent by Newton activities director Brian Engelken.
All but three of the tournament teams are staying in town. If any of the three remaining teams are unable to travel, the schedule may be subject to adjustment.

Salina South 51,
Rose Hill 37

The Salina South Cougars opened the 34th Newton Invitational with a 51-37 win over Rose Hill Thursday.
Tied 10-10, South hit a trey at the first quarter buzzer to take a lead the Cougars would never relinquish. South led 22-17 at the half.
Sally Thompson led South with 11 points. Taylor Goodness and Ashley Carey added nine points each.
Kelsey Webber led Rose Hill with 12 points. Whitney Bates added 10 points.
South outscored Rose Hill 12-0 from 3-point range.
South, 8-2, plays in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Rose Hill, 7-4, plays in the consolation semifinals at 3 p.m. today.

Olathe Northwest 35

Tiffany Bias scored 22 points to lead Andover Central to a 57-35 win over Olathe Northwest in the first round of the Newton Invitational.
Bias hit a half-court shot at the first qurter buzzer to put the Janguars up 15-10 and spark a 22-7 run that ended with Central leading 34-17 at the half.
Kaitlyn Tennison and Maddie Chapin added 10 points each for Central, 11-0.
Mackaela Carter led 1-9 Northwest with eight points. The Ravens are in their debut year in the NIT.
Central outscored Northwest 21-0 from 3-point range.
Central plays Salina South at 6:30 p.m. today in the semifinals. Northwest plays Rose Hill at 3 p.m. today in the consolation semifinals.

The Bishop Miege Stags made their debut to the Newton Invitational tournament with a 59-43 win over Garden City Thursday.
Rosie Youngstrom hit a trey with four seconds left in the first quarter to put Miege ahead 18-10. Youngstrom hit a trey at the halftime buzzer to put the Stags ahead 31-15. Garden City was shut out in the second quarter until Alyssa Heitschmidt hit a three-point play with 1:39 remaining in the first half.
Youngstrom hit six 3-pointers for 18 points. Adrianna Maurer added 10 points for the 10-2 Stags.
Paula Gonzales led Garden City with 14 points. Sydnee Sassaman added 11 points. Garden City falls to 5-5.
Bishop Miege plays in the semifinals at 8:15 p.m. today. Garden City plays in the consolation semifinals at 4:45 p.m. today.
