Police have determined no one was injured in a shooting incident Jan. 20 near U.S. Highway 50 and Ridge Road.

At about 1 a.m. Jan. 20, Harvey County deputies responded to the area of U.S. 50 and Ridge Road on a report of a disturbance.

Upon arrival, deputies heard multiple rounds of gunfire, a sheriff’s department news release stated.

After deputies made their presence known, they heard another series of gun shots, the release stated.

Deputies located a 34-year-old male subject walking out of the ditch of U.S. 50 just west of Ridge Road.

The subject said he had been shooting at another subject in the field and didn’t know if he hit him or not, the release stated.

Harvey County Sheriff’s officials said they believed the man was under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The subject was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered on U.S. 50, the release stated.

During an interview with law enforcement officers, it was determined the subject was not shooting at anyone, the release stated.

However, U.S. 50 had to be temporarily closed while law enforcement officials searched the area to confirm no one was hurt.

The 34-year-old man later was transported to the VA hospital for care and treatment. His name was not released.

Reports of the incident are being reviewed by the Harvey County attorney to determine if any criminal charges will be pursued.

Agencies that assisted in the incident included Newton Police Department, Halstead Police Department, Sedgwick Police Department, Hesston Police Department and the Harvey County Sheriff’s Department.
