EL DORADO — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team struggled shooting, rebounding and on defense, falling to Campus 57-31 Saturday in the consolation finals of the Bluestem Classic in El Dorado.
“Mentally, we went dead,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “Then fundamentally, we went dead. A lot of those little things we needed to do, we just didn’t. We played with a little more energy in the second half. There was no energy in the first half. We can use the excuse all we want that we played an overtime game the night before, but you have to be ready to play.”
Brett Thomas scored 15 points to lead Campus. Orenzo Brown scored 11, and Alec Meier scored 10.
Matt Moreland led Newton with seven points.
Newton was 11 of 47 from the field, while Campus was 20 of 36.
Newton opened the game cold from the field while Campus was seven of 11 to take an 18-8 lead.  Brown capped the run with a layup with five seconds left in the period.
Down by 18 in the second quarter, Moreland hit a trey at the buzzer for Newton to get the Railers within 15, 31-16.
The Railers were six of 26 shooting in the first half. Campus was 12 of 19, five of seven from 3-point range. Newton was two of 11 from long range.
Kyle Preston scored the first three points of the second half for Newton. Campus took a time out and scored the next 10.
Campus made a 9-2 run to start the fourth quarter. Newton was 0 for 3 from the line in that span. The reserves played the last 2 1/2 minutes.
“We knew this would be a tough game for us,” Cameron said. “Campus didn’t shoot the ball this well in the tournament. It seemed like we were in slow motion. Our rotation was slow. That’s what happens when your mental focus is lost.”
Newton plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Salina South.
“Our goal after tonight is to get better every game,” Cameron said. “This schedule for any team would be tough. We have Derby coming up. Goddard is playing hot. We have Mac.”
