fall in finals

HILLSBORO — The Hillsboro High School girls’ basketball team was edged by Thomas More Prep-Marian 45-38 Saturday in the finals of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.
Hillsboro jumped out to a 14-4 lead early in the game, but TMP finished the first half on a 20-6 run to lead 24-20 at intermission. The Lions were able to hold off Hillsboro the rest of the way.
Dakota Kaufman led Hillsboro with 22 points.
Rachel Jacobs led 11-1 TMP with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Hillsboro, 7-5, resumes MCAA play Friday, hosting Hoisington.
THIRD PLACE — Julia Zeiner scored 28 points to lead the Marion girls to a 61-56 win in the third-place game over the Hesston Swathers.
Hesston led by as many as 13 points. The Warriors made a 17-6 fourth-quarter run to claim the win.
Lindsay Hett scored 21 points for Marion, 9-2.
Mallory Schroeder scored 17 points for Hesston, 9-3. Sam Short added 14 points.
Marion hosts Ellinwood Tuesday in MCAA make-up play. Hesston plays Tuesday at Chapman.

third at Hillsboro

HILLSBORO — The Hesston High School boys’ basketball team edged Riley County 59-55 in the third-place game of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.
Trailing 33-31 at the half, Hesston made an 11-4 third quarter run.
Taylor Redding led Hesston with 19 points, followed by Logan Schrag with 10.
Joel Garver scored 20 points for Riley County. William Seaton scored 12, and Bryce Chaviz scored 11.
Hesston is 9-3 and plays Tuesday at Chapman.
FIFTH PLACE — Thomas More Prep-Marian edged Hillsboro 45-42 in the consolation finals.
Hillsboro led 25-22 at the half.
Ben Bebermeyer scored 14 points for Hillsboro, 2-9. Mason McCarty scored 10 points.
Pierce Schippers led TMP with eight points.
Hillsboro, 2-9, hosts Hoisington Friday.
SEVENTH PLACE — Eric Vogel scored 20 points and Isaac Hett added 16 to lead Marion to a 65-45 win over Republic County in the seventh-place game.

Landon Hedrstom scored 13 points for Republic County.
Marion plays Tuesday at home against Ellinwood.
