On Dec. 5, local award-winning a cappella chorus Sound of the Heartland spent the day spreading Christmas cheer to Newton and the surrounding community during a sing-a-thon.

The performances were underwritten by local sponsors Newton Medical Center, Pamela McCullough, Midwest Hearing Aids and Intrust Bank, and were presented at no charge to the recipients.

The chorus performed at Asbury Park, Presbyterian manor, Prairie Harvest, Prairie View, Kidron Bethel Village, Newton Medical Center and sites in Hesston and Halstead. They sang Christmas songs and carols.

Five guest singers joined the group. Rehearsals were conducted for four weeks prior to the sing-a-thon at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church in Newton. They guests learned the holiday music in four-part barbershop style from master director LaDonna Cheatham.

For four Thursdays, starting Jan. 7, the chorus will have open auditions, from 6 to 7 p.m. or by appointment at Trinity Heights United Methodist Church. Membership is open to women of all ages who love to sing and perform. Women singers of all ages are invited to visit.
