Harvey County Interurban will take over Halstead Public Transportation beginning in November.

Jeanie Flaming, transportation coordinator for Interurban, said Halstead had a Kansas Department of Transportation grant vehicle but did not meet the minimum mileage criteria of 2,500 miles and risked losing its van if Interurban did not take it over.

Flaming said a driver already is in place and will pick up people for various reasons, including:

In-town service from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, with a fare set at 50 cents a trip.

The Good Neighbor Nutrition congregate meal at the senior center, with at least 24 hours notice required

Medical trips from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekdays

Shopping trips to Hutchinson, which will be on the second and fourth Mondays. These trips will pick up in both Halstead and Burrton with a fare of $6. Pick up in Halstead will be at the Halstead Housing Authority, 815 W. Sixth St., and possibly at the senior center, Sixth and Poplar streets. Burrton pick up will be at the Burrton Senior Center at 124 N. Burrton St. Reservations should be made by the preceding Thursday.

Interurban recreational trips will pick up in Halstead as well. Flaming said Halstead riders will be picked up earlier than other riders. Trips vary monthly. Information can be obtained by calling Interurban. Interurban also offers service to the Wichita airport at $25 per person or $35 per couple, with trips available 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Flaming said she is open to trip ideas. Groups also can plan trips via Interuban and invite the public, with six weeks notice, or rent the van privately for a fee. Flaming also said Interurban is looking to the future for transportation needs in Burrton.
