I am really excited! The Harvey County Free Fair starts this weekend.

On Friday evening, exhibits are being accepted and some will be judged. Be sure to check your fair books for exact entry time. There are too many times for me to go over them in detail. The schedule is filled with fun things for the whole family.

The turtle races are back. They will be on Saturday with registration starting at 12:30 p.m. and the races beginning at 1 p.m. The turtle race will be at the same location as the Kiddy Tractor pull. The location of the carnival will move back to the old location for kids and parents who are interested in the carnival.

New this year for the auction on Tuesday evening will be an opportunity for you to buy one of the six to eight champion food items.

We, of course, will auction the livestock as usual. We just wanted to add something to the cows, chickens, pigs, goats and sheep.

It also will give kids who may not show livestock an opportunity to be in the auction.

But the fun part of the fair for me is watching the 4-H members and adults alike learn from having their products judged.

A lot of education takes place when the judge sits down with a child. Many times, a parent can tell his or her child they need to do something different, but when the judge tells them it sinks in.

And the most exciting thing is the joy on the children’s faces when they do well, not necessarily winning the Grand Champion award but just getting a blue ribbon.

Last year, I saw a young person who was an exhibitor who had gotten their first blue ribbon. They were so excited, they started crying.

You know, it is exciting and gratifying to have someone tell you you’re doing a good job.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention the good food we sell in the concession stand.

We again will do a meal of the day! I think one day will be pulled pork sandwich, chicken noodle and lasagna. These are limited and are many people’s favorites. Again, we will always have your favorite burgers — beef, pork or lamb. They are fresh and very good!

If you are needing a fair book, we just got a new shipment in, and you can stop by the office to get them.

I hope to see you at the fair. Come and have some fun!
