Sixteen people in the Stratford Addition in South Newton reported burglaries to their vehicles between 4 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Estimated damage to the vehicles was listed as $1,825, and theft losses were reported as $10,386, Lt. Eric Murphy of the Newton Police Department said.

In addition to the burglaries, a 2000 black Dodge Neon was stolen from Sheflied Court. The vehicle, which had the license plate WIR 874 when it was stolen, has yet to be recovered, Murphy said.

At about the same time, two vehicle burglaries were reported in the 100 block of Southwest Ninth Street while the vehicles were parked at a residence there, Murphy said.

Police do not believe the thefts were gang related, but they do believe they were connected.

Murphy said police have some leads in the case, but no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information on the case can call Crime Stoppers at 284-2400.

Calls will remain confidential, and information leading to a conviction could result in a reward.

In the meantime, Murphy urged residents to take cautions with their belongings and remove anything of value form their vehicles.

“By getting people to remove their valuables from their cars, they become less of a target and maybe we can reduce some of these losses,” Murphy said.
