Newton High School swimmer Brittany Winter is the latest athlete to join the ranks of Railers advancing to NCAA Division I competition.
Winter, a four-year letterwinner with the Railers with two state medals to her credit, signed to compete at Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., beginning with the 2009-10 school year.
“Swimming has always been my life,” Winter said. “I always wanted to swim in college. They were the first school to contact me. They have a really good program. I know I’ll be working harder. I’m hoping to cut my butterfly time down to under 59 (seconds) and maybe even get it to 57.”
Winter won 11 individual and relay Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II-III-IV titles, taking second five times. She placed seventh at state in the 100-yard butterfly as both a freshman and a senior. She scored at state in 14 other events. She was a team captain as a senior.
She holds eight school records — five in individual events and three as a member of a relay team.
Winter has been a member of the Swim Newton swim club for 13 years, which she will continue to compete in this summer.
“I have the region meet in August,” she said. “Then I have zone. So I’ll have a lot of swimming this summer.”
Winter is a YEK Scholarship winner. She has letters in academics and journalism. She was the yearbook editor in chief as a senior.
Missouri State is a two-time Missouri Valley Conference champion in women’s swimming.
