Michael Benewiat, 74, barber and entrepreneur, died Monday (May 25, 2009) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Kaufman Funeral Home in Halstead, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.


Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Halstead, with Father Steven Baxter officiating.


Michael Benewiat, 74, barber and entrepreneur, died Monday (May 25, 2009) at Newton Medical Center in Newton.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1934, in Hoczek, Poland, to John and Maria Benewiat.

He was a Halstead resident since 1972, formerly of Sedgwick. He was the owner/operator of Mike’s Barber Shop.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Halstead. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean conflict, he was past commander and life member of Hicks-Davison American Legion Post 268 in Sedgwick and Ruth-Wilson American Legion Post 231 in Halstead, and he was a life member of V.F.W. Post 971 in Newton.

He was a former Halstead Police Department reserve officer and an original Halstead Ambulance Department EMT. He also served on the Sedgwick Ambulance Department and Volunteer Fire Department.

On Sept. 11, 1956, he married Mary Alice Morris in Wichita. She died on Dec. 12, 2006.

Survivors include sons, Daniel (Tammy) Benewiat, John (Mona) Benewiat, Steve Benewiat and Mark (Reanna) Benewiat, all of Halstead; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Daniel Benewiat, and a granddaughter, Jessica Skye Benewiat.
