In his 10th season as head track coach at Marion High School, coach Grant Thierolf has a defending state champion relay team back to pace the Warriors.
Thierolf will be assisted by Deanna Thierolf (jumps), Rex Wilson (throws), Dick Schwartz (throws), Jill Hudson (hurdles), Charlotte Waner  (throws), Ann Leppke (distance runners) and Jerry Smith (pole vault).
The Warrior girls were third in the Mid-Central Activities Association last season, third at regionals and fourth at state in Class 3A.
The Marion boys were third in the MCAA, third in regionals and 17th at state.
“We are pretty experienced on both of our teams and very much look forward to the start of the season,” Grant Thierolf said “Our athletes have worked hard to get better, and we cannot wait to get started.”
The Marion girls are led by juniors Julie Zeiner, Kaylee Heerey, Kristen Steinborn and Danae Edwards, who won the 4x400-meter relay. Zeiner also took second in the 300-meter low hurdles, third in the long jump and third in the triple jump.
Returning state medalists for the boys include senior Adam Regnier and junior Ryan Jones, members of the third-place 4x800-meter relay team. Jones also took eighth in the 1,600-meter run.
Junior Tylor Neil took fifth in the triple jump. Senior Luke Gordon took seventh in the high jump. Junior Nick Klenda took eighth in the discus.
Also back is senior Brad Klenda, who took 10th in the pole vault.
Other returning letterwinners for the girls include seniors Camille Christensen (3,200-meters, 1,600-meters) and Amanda Richmond (800-meters); and juniors Briget Lundy (3,200-meters) and Jaclyn DeForest (1,600-meters).
Other returning letterwinners for the boys include seniors Matt Thierolf (discus), Mitchell Leppke (javelin, 100-meters, 200-meters), Elliott Hett (110-meter high hurdles, 300-meter intermediate hurdles, high jump, triple jump); juniors Parker Ash (shot put, discus), Sheldon Boone (javelin, long jump), Doug Schroeder (shot put), Drew Maddox (100-meters, 200-meters), Eric Vogel (400-meters, triple jump), Louis Holt (3,200-meters), Sam Ehrlich (shot put, javelin); and sophomores Dillon Richmond (pole vault) and Connor Thierolf (javelin).
Other girls on the team include freshmen Whitney Gordon (high jump, 100-meter high hurdles, triple jump) and Alex Young (100-meter high hurdles, 300-meter low hurdles).
Other boys on the team include sophomores Michael Kirkpatrick (3,200-meters), Brandon Meierhoff (1,600-meters) and Randy Regnier (pole vault, 800-meters).
Grant Thierolf called Marion, Smoky Valley, Hoisington and Lyons the top contenders in the MCAA this season.
