Two people avoided an icy fate after their vehicle skidded into the Arkansas River.

Wichita Police Sgt. Roger Runft said the driver was traveling Saturday night in the Central Business District and swerved to avoid hitting vehicles that already had been involved in an accident.

The vehicle hit plowed snow pushed up against a guard rail, which acted as a ramp and launched the vehicle over the side and into the Arkansas River below. A man and woman escaped from the vehicle and made it safely to shore. They were later treated and released from a hospital for minor injuries.

The accident was one of several reported across the state linked to the snow and ice that moved through the region Friday and Saturday.
