Carl Martin Porter, 92, passed away Friday (Jan. 23, 2009).

Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Baker Funeral Home in Valley Center.


Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Baptist Church, 320 N. Sheridan in Valley Center


Carl Martin Porter, 92, passed away Friday (Jan. 23, 2009).

He was born to Michael and Lula (McCarver) Porter in Sonora, Ark. They preceded him in death.

He retired from Boeing as a technical writer. However, he was a man with many professions: printer/publisher; school teacher at various times in Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri; maintenance engineer at several manufacturing companies; and farmer, dad, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He graduated from Northeastern State College in Tahlequah, Okla., and later earned a masterís degree from Wichita State University.

He has been a member of First Baptist Church of Sedgwick and involved with the Newton (Sedgwick) Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and Sedgwick School Board, and he was a 4-H leader.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Reba Prince Porter; three sons, Michael (Pam) of Valley Center, Martin (Kathy) of Frisco, Texas, and Myron of Sedgwick; two daughters, Lila (Robert) Taylor of Kansas City, Kan., and Sharon (Carlos) Lopez of Shawnee; 15 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, William, and daughter, Margaret Lu.
