Hillsboro takes fourth, Marion eighth at tourney


HILLSBORO — The second-ranked (Kansas Basketball Coaches Association, Class 4A) Hesston Swather boys’ basketball team jumped to an early lead against the top-ranked (Class 2A) Republic County, holding on for a 50-42 win Saturday in the championship game of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.

The title was Hesston’s second, the first coming in 2004.

The Swathers shot 19 of 40 from the field and 10 of 13 from the line. Republic County was 15 of 42 shooting and eight of 10 from the free throw line.

Hesston led 13-7 after the first quarter and 26-15 at the half.

Rob Moore led Hesston with 15 points. Michael Janzen and Alex Roth added 12 points each.

Trey Duensing scored 16 points with 13 rebounds for Republic County. Trevor Kuhlman added 10 points.

Hesston is 12-0. Republic County is 11-1. Hesston hosts Chapman at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in non-league play.

The host Hillsboro Trojans fell to Thomas More Prep-Marian 55-41 in the third-place game.

Hillsboro trailed 26-19 at the half and was outscored 12-3 in the third quarter.

Nolan McNeil scored 19 points with 14 rebounds for TMP. Shane Gottschalk scored 12 points. Drew Hertel scored 11.

Daniel Jost scored 16 points for Hillsboro.

The 6-6 Trojans play Feb. 3 at Lyons.

The Marion Warriors gave up a 21-12 fourth quarter, falling to Sunrise Christian Academy 57-45 in the seventh-place game of the Hillsboro Trojan Classic.

SCA led 31-19 at the half. Marion came back with a 14-5 third-quarter run.

Tamiko McKinney scored 21 points for SCA. B.J. Bonamy added 18 points with 15 rebounds.

Elliott Hett scored 16 points for Marion. Eric Vogel scored 10 points.

Marion is 4-8 and plays Friday at home against Council Grove.
