City to win

DODGE CITY — The Newton High School boys’ basketball team got off to the start it wanted against the Dodge City Red Demons in the championship game of the Dodge City Tournament of Champions Saturday at the Dodge City Civic Center.
However, a bad second quarter proved costly. Newton rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half to take the lead late, but a Miles Morin layup with seven seconds left gave the host Red Demons a 43-42 win.
“We showed a characteristic that we haven’t shown since early in the season,” Newton coach Don Cameron said. “We got frustrated, and frustration leads to bad shots and turnovers. The second quarter tonight was just very uncharacteristic in terms of composure. It shouldn’t have happened, but it did. Dodge is a great team. They executed. I’m proud of the way our kids fought back.”
Morin scored 11 points with seven rebounds for the 6-4 Red Demons. Freshman Rico Hogan added nine points.
Tyler Mitchem led Newton with nine points, followed by Roland LaCoste with seven.
Newton jumped ahead 7-2 aided by one for 10 shooting for the Red Demons. Dodge City took a time out, but the Railers hit two more shots in the period for a 12-2 lead.
Newton was three of four on 3-point shots in the first quarter.

Newton got within three early in the third quarter despite missing three of four free throws to start the period. Dodge City then got up by eight with chances to go ahead further.
Newton rallied again, sparked by a LaCoste three-point play. An Amaude Frank trey with 48 seconds left in the period got the Railers within one. Bruce Campbell answered with a layup at the other end to put the Red Demons up 32-29 at the end of the quarter.
Newton missed its first five shots of the fourth quarter, hitting two Evan Kaufman free throws, allowing Dodge City a 4-2 start. An Isaiah Thaw trey with 5:16 left in regulation got the Railers back within two, 36-34.
Newton missed two chances to tie on open layups off turnovers. Rico Hogan answered with a layup and a three-point play with 2:21 left to put the Red Demons up seven.
“A lot of teams there might have given up,” Cameron said. “The kids fought back. They played very good defense in the fourth quarter. We played good defense in the first quarter. The third quarter was solid.”
A Thaw three-point play, followed by a Brian Baker trey cut the lead to one with 1:16 left in regulation. Jake Reinhardt blocked a Hogan shot and hit two free throws with 26.2 seconds left in regulation to put the Railers back in the lead. After Morin’s layup, Mitchem’s layup attempt at the buzzer bounced off the rim.
The loss sets the Railers back to 7-5, snapping a five-game winning streak. Newton returns to play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday against Salina South at Ravenscroft Gym. South is 3-8 after a sixth-place finish at its home invitational.
“This shouldn’t (stop our momentum),” Cameron said. “It’s up to us which way we want to handle it. They won a couple of games. They’ll have some momentum. Mentally, we have to get ready. Then we get some time off.”
