With discussion still circulating regarding the possibility of a Newton branch of the Greater Wichita YMCA, one issue is how the organization is funded. While the Newton Recreation Commission is funded through tax dollars and revenues, the YMCA is a 501(c)3 non-profit and employs capital campaigns and other fund-raising efforts.

The Greater Wichita YMCA also receives United Way funding to help with specific programs, said Dennis Shoenbeck, executive director.
