More than 900 students received degrees from The University of Kansas after the summer session, Registrar Cindy Derritt announced.

Because KU conducts only one formal commencement ceremony each year, many of these graduates will return as members of the class of 2009 to take part in commencement exercises May 17.

Local and area students are:

Halstead Ryan E. Hodge, son of Denise Hodge, master of public health.

Newton Elizabeth Marie Goering, daughter of Randall and Carol Goering, pre-social welfare, bachelor of social work; Brooke Lindsey Grimmett, daughter of Georgetta Grimmett, design, bachelor of fine arts; Danielle Nicole Lawrence, daughter of Dane and Melissa Lawrence, psychology, bachelor of arts, bachelor of general studies; Catherine Lynn Powell, nursing, master of science.

North Newton Jennifer Scott Koontz, daughter of Richard and Barbara Koontz, family practice, Prof 1 Certificate.

Sedgwick Jesse Ray Jones, son of Mary Jones, psychology, bachelor of general studies.
