More than 40 years after John Lennon quipped that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus, the Vatican seems to have forgiven the singer.

An article in the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano marked the anniversary of The Beatles’ “White Album” and praised the band.

According to wire reports, the paper described Lennon’s remark as “showing off, bragging by a young English working-class musician who had grown up in the age of Elvis Presley and rock and roll and had enjoyed unexpected success."

After Lennon made the comment in 1966, there were public burnings of Beatles records and death threats from the Ku Klux Klan.
