What do chili and books have in common? Selling both was a great way to raise funds for Slate Creek Elementary School recently in their efforts to add a new set of encyclopedias to the media center. Parents and staff at Slate Creek had a chili supper and used book sale, along with a family reading night, on Nov. 13. The goal of the event was to raise $795 for the encyclopedia set, almost exactly the amount raised.

Along with bowls of steaming chili and home-baked cookies for dessert, the PTO sold used children’s books to help raise the needed funds. After the chili feed, families retired to the school library to sit and read together for a while. Parents and children read to each other, while media center specialist David Stockton read to groups of children and parents using a digital projector to show the book on a large screen. Some of the supplies for the chili feed were provided by Wendy’s, Subway and the Bread Basket.
