A math teacher at Buhler High School has been named 2009 Kansas Teacher of the Year.

Cindy Couchman, a teacher at Buhler High for 14 years, was chosen from among eight finalists.

Others in the field included Mary Martha Good, who is a kindergarten teacher at Skelly Elementary School in El Dorado, and Mary Bradshaw, a teacher at Chisholm Middle School in Newton.

Couchman was honored at a banquet Saturday in Wichita.

The National Teacher of the Year Program, which started in 1952, is the oldest, most prestigious national honors program for excellence in teaching. It is a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers.

The Kansas State Department of Education sponsors the award program at the state level.
