The Hesston College volleyball team closed out Region IV play with a five-game win Wednesday at home against Independence Community College.

The Larks won the match 12-25, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18, 15-9.

“Offensively, our team was simply able to come together in this match,” Hesston coach Vanessa Schroeder said. “We had good consistency on the attack tonight. I was so pleased to see Rachel Steckly step up and have her best hitting night of the year in her last home match of her career. Independence’s (Shardae) Philogene is a tremendous athlete and kept our defense guessing, but our block was able to contain her more as the match progressed. A solo block by Rachel Steckly at 11 points in game five pushed us through to the end.”

Independence falls to 18-17, 5-7 in district play. Hesston is 10-17, 3-9 in district play.

Hesston ends the regular season at noon Saturday against the Bethel junior varsity in North Newton.
