The Bethel College volleyball team retained sole possession of second place in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, but had to work to do it.

The Threshers downed University of Saint Mary in five games Wednesday in Leavenworth, 29-27, 22-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-9. Bethel improves to 18-9, 13-2 in conference play. With three matches remaining, Bethel is one match behind Friends and one match ahead of Bethany.

Saint Mary falls to 15-14, 8-7 in KCAC play. The Spires were coming off a three-game win over Bethany.

Bethel hosts Southwestern at 2 p.m. Saturday at Thresher Gym.
