The Bethel College women’s soccer team may have seen its post-season hopes evaporate with a 1-0 loss to University of Saint Mary Wednesday in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday at Joe W. Goering Field.

Bethel falls to 3-12-1, 2-5-1 in KCAC play. Saint Mary wins its first conference game of the season, improving to 4-10-2, 1-6-1 in the conference.

With one game left for Bethel, the Threshers need to beat Tabor Saturday, coupled with a Sterling loss or tie to Friends and a Tabor loss or tie to Friends in a make-up game next week.

“The women are in a situation where they haven’t made the post-season in a long time,” Moore said. “It’s been a long season. The players have been battling a lot of adversity. They’ve been fighting some things in their head. We took a look at their record, and we underestimated them. They weren’t that bad. We gave them a chance to stick around, and they made us pay for it.”

Megan Mance scored for the Spires in the 83rd minute on an eight-yard shot.

Neither team did much in the first half. Bethel did have a 4-0 advantage in total shots. The Spires made some runs early in the second half, but were turned away. After a long stretch of the ball just playing back and forth in the second half with neither team generating chances, the Spires were able to score. Bethel created several chances in the closing minutes but couldn’t finish.

Bethel was flagged for five offsides calls.

“We tried to pressure, but I don’t think we came with enough pressure,” Moore said. “We made some adjustments with the lineup. Maybe that was my fault for putting kids in spots they weren’t used to. We were holding the ball a little too long, not communicating enough.”

Bethel ends the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday at home against Tabor.

“We have to pressure the ball,” Moore said. “They have a player who is quite good up top. I hope we can solve that. We have to want it more than they do.”
