The Bethel College soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive and even have a chance at a winning season in conference play, stopping the University of Saint Mary 5-1 Wednesday night at Joe W. Goering Field.

Freshman Mario Reyes, a Newton High grad, and Andre Hernandez, a freshman from Honduras, each scored two goals for the Threshers.

Bethel is 4-11, 4-4 in KCAC play with a game to go. Bethel needs a win Saturday against Tabor and two Friends losses.

“It’s been a situation where to make the playoffs, we needed to win our last two home games,” Bethel coach Jason Moore said. “We’ve been talking about it being a two-game playoff. We knew we had a job to do. We came out and did what we had to do. This was our first win at home. We’ve been on the road for two weeks. It was nice to win in front of our home crowd. This provides motivation for us.”

The win was Bethel’s fourth in the last five games. A win Saturday would give the Threshers a winning record in conference play after losing their first 10 games. In the last five games, Bethel has outscored opponents 14-2.

“We talked about being two seasons — the conference and non-conference season,” Moore said. “We knew we would take our lumps in the non-conference season. How we did in the conference would define our level of success.”

Saint Mary falls to 2-13-1, 2-6 in KCAC play. The loss knocks the Spires out of playoff contention. USM drops its fourth straight game.

A tripping foul against Saint Mary set up a Reyes penalty kick in the ninth minute. Reyes struck less than three minutes later on a through ball in the middle. Hernandez completes the scoring for Bethel in the first half on a long pass from the defense.

“(Reyes) has been working hard and battling injuries,” Moore said. “I wanted to get him an opportunity to get a goal, hoping that would loosen him up a bit. That plan worked. Mario made me look like a genus.”

Bethel put the game away in the 52nd minute when Braden Eschete hit a long blast that went off USM keeper Alex Waite’s hands and into the back of the net.

The Spires broke the shutout in the 70th minute on a short shot by Dylan Gaul set up by a long cross by Nolan Bohannon. Bethel came back 48 seconds later, scoring on a Hernandez goal set up by a Kevin Galo cross.

Bethel hosts Tabor at 5 p.m. Saturday.

“They are doing very well,” Moore said. “From what I’ve heard, this is one of the better teams they’ve had in a long time. They have been playing teams very tough. We will have our hands full with Tabor. They are a quality side.”
