Bethel College junior tennis player Paige McKinney went 5-0 Friday through Sunday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central-West Regionals in Topeka.

McKinney won championship flight singles title without dropping a set. In the finals, she beat Sydnee Mela of William Jewell 6-3, 6-0.

McKinney qualifies for the ITA-National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Small College National Tennis Championships Oct. 16 to 19 in Mobile, Ala.

The tournament is comprised of the eight regional winners.

““Paige had a wonderful tournament,” Bethel coach Lonnis Isaac said. “We know going in that if she played up to her capabilities that she would have a great chance of winning. Paige was 3-0 against the second, third and fourth seeds last year, and sometimes that can add to the pressure of trying to win a title like this. I thought she handled everything great and came up with some solid tennis when it was needed. Going to the national championships will be great because Paige will see the top ranked players in the NAIA from the other regions. If she plays like she is capable of, I would not be surprised to see her make a big dent at this tournament as well.”

Also competing for Bethel in championship singles were Allison Kaster, who finished 1-2; Rachael Bachman, who finished 0-2; Katie Robertson, who finished 1-2; Katie Malotte, who finished 0-2.

In doubles, McKinney and Bachman lost in the second round. Kaster and Malotte finished 1-1. Robertson and Abby Miller lost in the first round.

In the women’s B flight singles, Miller and Julia Huxman both finished 0-2.

For the Bethel men, Drew Pippin finished 1-1 in the singles championship flight. Matt Hershberger, Ben Moore and Sam Gaeddert all finished 0-2.

In the B flight singles, Scott Middleton and Brent Badawieh both finished 2-1, falling in the quarterfinals. Nathan Dick finished 0-2.

Bethel resumes play in the spring.
