Joel Robert Widdel, 24, of Sturgis, passed away early Monday morning (Sept. 29, 2008) at his home following a hard fought battle with cancer.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hackman Family Funeral Homes, Hackman Chapel, 114 S. Nottawa St. in Sturgis.


Funeral services celebrating the life of Joel Widdel will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis. The Revs. Michael Klafehn and Calvin Kolzow will officiate.


Joel Robert Widdel, 24, of Sturgis, passed away early Monday morning (Sept. 29, 2008) at his home following a hard fought battle with cancer.

He was born Dec. 4, 1983, in Sturgis, a son to Michael and Vickie (Reusser) Widdel.

Joel had resided in the Sturgis area his entire life. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and Sturgis Public Schools. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Sturgis and enjoyed hunting, fishing and following sports, particularly college basketball, and he was an avid fan of the Kansas Jayhawks.

Joel is survived by his mother, Vickie Widdel of Sturgis; a sister, Kara (Widdel) Falkenstein and husband, Rob, of Sturgis; grandparents, Robert and Betty Widdel of Sturgis and Dwaine and Della Reusser of Newton; a nephew, Seth Falkenstein of Sturgis; a niece, Hannah Falkenstein of Sturgis; aunts, Sue (Widdel) Rangler and husband, Clint, of Sturgis, and Sondra (Reusser) Groene and husband Matt of Winfield; uncles, Bryan Reusser and wife, Therese, of Tulsa, Okla., and Troy Reusser and wife, Sharon, of Wichita; great-aunt, Ruth Karter of Newton; cousins, Kimberly (Groene) Simpson and husband, Brian, of Kansas City, Mo., Steven Groene of Charlottesville, Va., Andrew Groene of Emporia, and Jacob and Jackson Reusser of Wichita; and many members of an extended family and friends, including Mike Shufelt and Karrie Hoover of Sturgis.

He was preceded in death by his father, Michael Widdel, on July 6, 1997.

A graveside committal will follow the service at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis.
