Ada Belle Polk Phillips, 87, longtime Sedgwick resident, passed away Saturday (Sept. 27, 2008) at Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

She was born June 18, 1921, in Travis, Texas, to James Ellis and Nettie (Johnson) Polk. They preceded her in death.

Ada was one of the original “Rosie the Riveters,” building aircraft during World War II in Texas. There was not a piece of farm equipment Ada could not operate. She later worked as a cook for the Sedgwick Independent school district; however, her true love in life was being a homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Ada and her husband, Lauren, were married June 5, 1943, in Fort Worth, Texas. They loved to hunt, fish, be outdoors and just sit together on their front porch swing. Ada lost her “best friend” in December 2007.

She played the harmonica and enjoyed the simple act of whistling.

Survivors include daughter, Sharon and Walter Sanders of Commerce, Texas; son, James and Judy Phillips of Fort Worth; twin sister, Ida Jones of Post, Texas; six additional sisters; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by a brother, James Polk.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today at Petersen Funeral Home in Newton, with family greeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

Committal service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillside Cemetery in Sedgwick, followed by funeral service at 11 a.m. at Plymouth Congregational Church in Sedgwick, with Pastor Craig Reynolds of the church officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas in care of the funeral home.
