The Newton High School volleyball team claimed a fourth-place finish Saturday at the Newton Invitational.

The Railers went 4-0 in pool play, stopping Wichita North 25-21, 25-17, Andover Central 28-26, 25-22, Buhler 25-20, 25-16 and Hays 24-26, 25-8, 25-22.

In the semifinals, Newton was upended by Wichita Northwest 28-26, 18-25, 25-20. Andover Central avenged its loss to Newton in the third-place match, winning 26-24, 25-17.

Wichita Heights won the team title, downing Northwest in the finals 25-14, 25-14.

“The level of competition this year was extremely tough,” Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. “It was very well balanced. A lot of matches went to three games, which made for a very long day. I doubt that any team there had the same amount of games this week as we did. You could see fatigue start to set in when we started the semifinal round.

“I know that they girls gave all of the energy they could to every game today, unfortunately we ran out of steam. I saw a lot of the changes that we wanted to make. I’m so glad we have a week off and can take some time to really break things down.”

Newton is 19-7 and hosts Campus and McPherson at 5 p.m. Oct. 7 at Ravenscroft Gym.
