• My father’s forefathers came over on the Mayflower. My mother’s forefathers were standing on the shore to greet them.

• KU is keeping its identity whistle — let’s keep our train whistle. I graduated from Newton High School and now work in Wichita but come home to Newton, a railroad town. My dad worked for the Santa Fe, and I’m proud of our heritage. We don’t need a new YMCA or a quiet zone.

• I don’t know who that guy is that is complaining about the railroad. Evidently, he didn’t make his living by working on the railroad. I think if he doesn’t like the whistle he should just move. Get out in the country a little ways, and he won’t hear it.

• My opinion is Newton has always been a railroad town. I appreciate my railroad pension, and I think all this business about a quiet zone is absolutely ridiculous. When is this one-horse town going to get either a railroad overpass or underpass so we don’t have to wait on trains five or six times a day?

• Water is not an inexhaustible commodity. Ethanol production is a very gluttonous user of water. How will that effect Newton/Harvey County? Try a different idea!
