The Newton High School football team had chances against the McPherson Bullpups, but gave up too many big plays, falling 41-2 Friday in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II play.McPherson improves to 4-0, 3-0 in AV-CTL II play. Newton falls to 3-1, 2-1 in division play.“They played better than we did,” Newton coach Brent Glann said. “They made plays. We had chances. We fought hard. We came back. We cut it to a 12-point deficit, had them at a third-and-20 and gave up a long touchdown. We basically gave them two touchdowns to start the game and had to fight from behind the rest of the way. Other than that, we fought very hard. We had several guys play very well.”Final stats were not available at press time.“Stopping their passing game was a major problem for us,” Glann said. “We tried double-teaming people. We tried zone coverages. We tried man. We tried us all, and they just torched us. This was very similar to last year. We’d get them third-and-15 or third-and-20 and give up a first down or a touchdown. We work on pass coverage more than most teams do. We get teams in third-and-long or fourth-and-long, and give up a big play.”McPherson needed just five plays from scrimmage to score two touchdowns, the first on two long plays and the second on a 31-yard pass from Joel Piper to Christian Ulsaker. A bad punt snap gave McPherson the ball on the Railer seven. Wyandotte is 0-4 after a 34-8 loss to Tonganoxie.“We have to come back on Monday and get ready to go to Kansas City,” Glann said. “I told the guys I’m more worried about us than I am of them. We’re kind of going into this one blind. The team has to stay together, stay close and help each other out. For this particular game, having the extra day will help. We’ll take the weekend off and come back ready to go on Monday.”McPherson 14 0 20 7 —41Newton 2 7 0 13 —22Scoring1q. M Ulsaker 31-yd. pass from Piper (Clary kick) 9:321q.
