Most childhood obesity problems could be prevented if young people were eating better and getting more exercise.

Although there are some genetic and hormonal causes of childhood obesity, most excess weight is caused by youth eating too much and exercising too little, said Cookie Wiebe, Harvey County Heath Department Health and Wellness director.

Children, unlike adults, need extra nutrients and calories to fuel their growth and development, according to the Mayo Clinic Web site.
