The Newton High School girls’ tennis team claimed an individual title and a second-place team finish Thursday at the Arkansas City Invitational.

Arkansas City topped Newton 29-25. Winfield was third at 23.

Newton was led at first singles by Avery Vogts, who went 3-0, winning the championship match over an Arkansas City player 8-6.

At second singles, Lynnie Tran finished 2-1 to take third.

At first doubles, Mollie Emerson and Diane Brack lost in the first round but won the next two to finish fifth.

At second doubles, Carly Blaufuss and Adrienne Buss placed 1-2 to take fourth.

“Today was Avery's first shot at No. 1 singles this season,” Newton coach Nick Sisson said. “She did a great job of staying mentally tough against some frustrating opponents. Lynnie has fought for wins all season long. It was nice to finally see her medal, and she deserved it today. Today was the first time Mollie and Diane have played together this season. They got out to a slow start but played better as the day went on. I’m pleased they finished with two wins. (Blaufuss and Buss) played well today. They won their first match together, which guaranteed them a spot in the top-four finishes.”

Newton competes Thursday at the Hutchinson Invitational.
