The Newton High School boys’ soccer team have proven it can stay with about any team out there.

Winning those close games will be the next step.

Austin Steadman hit a penalty shot in the 86th minute to lead Derby to a 2-1 overtime win over the Railers at Fischer Field.

The loss is the Railers third straight, all by one goal. Newton falls to 2-5 with four of the losses by one goal and three in overtime.

“We’re matching up well against top teams. We’re just not getting the results,” Newton coach Scott Jantzi said. “We came out strong, but got complacent. We started trying to play long balls instead of short passes through the middle. In the second half, (Derby) came out and stepped up their pace. They started putting a lot of pressure on us. We had a hard time adjusting. It was an unfortunate handball in the penalty box.”

The loss was Newton’s second straight where a penalty kick was the game winner.

Steadman scored both goals for Derby, 6-2.

Newton drew first blood when Guillermo Meza scored on a breakaway from Clover Castillo. Derby replied in the 20th minute when Steadman converted a back pass from Craig Taylor. Derby missed a shot off the crossbar late in the half. Newton had several breakaway chances that the Railers failed to convert, along with problems against the Panthers’ off-sides trap.

Neither team did much offensively early in the second half. Newton keeper Brady Coffman stopped a 25-yard direct kick late in the game.

Newton plays at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fischer Field against Hutchinson, followed by a game Thursday at Valley Center.

“We have Hutch on Tuesday,” Jantzi said. “It will be another tough match. We need to keep making strides.”

SOUTH MAKE-UP — The game scheduled for Tuesday against Salina South, but called because of lightning, will be made up at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Salina Soccer Complex Field 4, 2100 E. Magnolia. The junior varsity game will follow.
