The Halstead High School cross country team competed Tuesday at the Southeast of Saline Invitational in Gypsum.

The Halstead girls placed 10th out of 10 teams scoring. The Halstead boys were 12th out of 14 teams.

“It turned out to be a wild and crazy afternoon at Southeast of Saline,” Halstead coach Curtis Vermillion said. “Just after the middle school races were over, a storm front moved in, which caused for less than ideal conditions and was the reason for two races being cancelled. Traditionally this has been one of the toughest meets of the year, and this season was no different. Several teams participating are ranked highly in the state polls, and very deserving.

“Overall, I felt our runners gave a good effort and competed well. Almost every high school runner on our team improved his or her time from the Peabody meet last week, and most people would agree the Southeast of Saline course is tough. The middle school runners had slower times, as seems to be the case on this course, but their overall places were great. We need to continue to focus on the mental part of running and challenge one another to step it up. I’ve been pleased with the progress of most team members but would like to see more consistency.”

Halstead hosts its invitational at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wedgewood Golf Course.
