The Newton High School volleyball team rebounded to claim wins over Arkansas City and Chaparral Thursday in Arkansas City.

Newton downed Arkansas City 25-9, 25-8 in Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League Division II play and Chaparral 25-9, 25-12 in non-league play.

“Our focus going into this evening was cutting down our hitting errors,” Newton coach Jamie Dibbens said. “We were very disappointed after Tuesday’s loss to Valley (Center) and when we broke down the stats, found that we had 15 hitting errors. I was very proud of the girls tonight, because we only had three errors total in our game against Chaparral. The most exciting part of the evening for me as a coach was to see how the team pulled together. We played with a ton of energy through both matches, and that is exactly what I was looking for.”

Against Arkansas City, Arin McMullen and Katelyn Alexander had seven kills each. Katie Loescher had five kills. Casey Carr had 20 assists. McMullen had three aces. Amber Westney had seven digs, followed by Sadie Minkevitch and Chelsea Gronau with six each. Alexander had seven blocks total.

Against Chaparral, Alexander had seven kills and 10 blocks. Ronen had five kills. Carr had 14 assists. McMullen had two aces and nine blocks. Gronau had 16 digs.

Newton is 15-5, 5-1 after the first round of AV-CTL II play. Newton hosts the Newton Invitational at 9 a.m. Saturday.
