The Berean Academy cross country team came off a strong finish last year with both the Warrior boys’ and girls’ teams taking seventh at the Class 2A state meet.

The Warriors are looking forward to another successful season this year,

“Looking back at the 2007 season of cross country at Berean, there are a lot of good memories,” Berean Academy coach Mark Anderson said. “Three new additional members were added to the team that worked hard and contributed a lot. Those runners were Aaron Funk for the boys and Ivy McClenahan and Megan Wiebe for the girls. It also was the last season at Berean for Adriana Claassen. She contributed so much to the team with her spirit of encouragement and her hard work ethic. Adriana will be missed this year.

“There were many emotional highs and lows during the 2007 season that the team had to endure — injuries, disappointments, and expectations. Through the encouragement of fellow team members and parents, and the constant challenge of learning to trust God, the season was a success and the athletes persevered.”

The Warrior girls took third at the Berean Academy Invitational, second at the regional meet and seventh at state. Amber Wright set a school record at 4,000 meters in 16:50.

The Berean boys took third at the Swather Special, third at the Southeast of Saline Invitational, third at the Berean Academy Invitational, third at the Circle Invitational, second at the Heart of America League meet, first at regionals and seventh at state.

Josiah Busenitz set a school record in 5,000 meters at 17:03.

The Warriors have 14 runners this season — six girls and eight boys.

Returning for the Warrior girls are senior Wright, junior Emily Reed and junior Megan Wiebe. Newcomers for the girls are senior Trisha Bevan, freshman Valerie Busenitz and freshman Brittny Czarnowsky.

Returnees for the Berean Academy boys include juniors Josiah Busenitz, Justin Claassen, Michael Claassen, Lane Holmes and Arlan Newby, and sophomore Aaron Funk. Newcomers include freshmen Steven Busenitz and Daniel Claassen.

“Berean’s cross country is looking forward to the challenge of a new season and what challenges that the Lord has for the team this year,” Anderson said. “Great competition is available at every meet. The team and coach give a big thank you to the athletic department, parents/families, and students for their support and prayers during the season.”
