The Hesston College women’s soccer team managed to stay with Garden City Community College for the first 40 minutes, but the last 50 belonged to the visiting Broncbusters with a 5-1 win over the Larks Wednesday night at the HC soccer field.

The game was the season opener for both teams. Melvi Ojeda scored three goals for the Broncbusters. Mary Jones added two goals with an assist. Megan Schrock scored Hesston’s goal.

“Being our first game, conditioning was a big thing,” Hesston coach Kurt Hostetler said. “We’ve only been practicing for a week. We’ve been battling nagging injuries all that time. We still haven’t completely recovered. I saw some good things out there. We still have some things we need to work on.”

Each team scored with their first shot of the season, each coming in the opening minutes.

Hesston opened the scoring when Schrock took a pass from Amanda Birky. Ojeda replied for the Broncbusters in the 13th minute.

Garden City scored in the 39th minute on a 20-yard shot by Jones. Jones scored again off a corner kick with 21.8 seconds left in the half.

Ojeda scored her second goal of the game 70 seconds into the second half. Ojeda finished the hat trick in the 61st minute.

The two teams will meet again at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 in Garden City in a game that will count in the National Junior College Athletic Association Region VI standings.

Hesston returns to play at 5:30 p.m. Saturday against first-year squad Western Texas College. It will be the second game ever for the Westerners.
