Kristen McCurdy selected as winner of NYC trip

Nine Youth Entrepreneurs Kansas students recently participated in the Citi Group Smith Barney/YEK Partnership.

During this nine week event, students met once a week and were paired with a financial advisor to learn about this profession and gained information about wealth management and the stock markets. Students chose a particular stock to follow and presented their findings to members of the Smith Barney staff.

Four students were chosen to present to a panel of judges at the end of the partnership. An all expenses paid trip to New York city was awarded to the top two participants.

Kristen McCurdy of Newton High School was named as a winner along with Ariel Nixon of Wichita Campus High School.

Each summer graduates of YEK are afforded an opportunity to intern with businesses within the Wichita area. Participants not only learn how that specific industry operates, they also compete for college scholarships and other incentives. Kylie Stupka, executive director of YEK said that, “Not only will our student winners tour New York City, they will be able to be on the trading floor of the New York Stock Exchange. Ariel and Kristen will have an opportunity most of us dream about.”
