The Wichita Wingnuts finished the first half of the season of American Association play with a 9-7 win over the Sioux City Explorers Saturday at Lewis and Clark Park in Sioux City.

Wichita finishes 26-21, while Sioux City finishes 21-27. The Wingnuts finished in second place in the North Division, 4 1/2 games behind Sioux Falls, which earns a playoff spot.

Season records are reset for the second half. The second-half winner will face Sioux Falls in a best-of-five series.

Down 4-0 after the first inning, the Wingnuts rallied to tie the game 6-6. Michael Thompson put Wichita ahead with a three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning.

Wichita’s Brenan Herrera went four for four with two runs scored. Stephen Pearson went three for four with three RBIs. Jose Armado and Chris Colton each went two for four with a run scored and an RBI. Leivi Ventura went three for five. Thompson finished two for five.

Wichita used five pitchers, and Sioux City used six. Doug Hern, the third Wingnut pitcher used, retired all four batters faced to get the win and improve to 4-2. Byron Embry pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Mike Tamney, Sioux City’s fourth pitcher, took the loss.

Dustin Jones went three for four with two runs scored for the Explorers. Juan Camacho and Chad Gabriel each went two for four, Camacho drove in two runs. Sam Walker went two for two. Former Wichita State player Nick McCoola went two for five. Another former Shocker, Derek Schermerhorn, drove in two runs. Schermerhorn started the season with the Wingnuts.

Wichita opens the second half of the season at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday to start a three-game road series against the Pensacola Pelicans.
