The Newton Rebels came into Saturday night’s Walter Johnson League twinbill at Klein-Scott Field tied for the lead in the Walter Johnson League.

Park City won the first game 4-2. Newton won the second game 2-1.

Both teams finished the night 11-4 in WJL play. Park City swept Springfield Sunday to improve to 13-6, 13-4 in league play. Newton is 13-7 overall.

In the first game against Park City, the Rangers scored first on a two-out, RBI single for Scott Beckwith in the top of the third inning. Newton replied in the bottom of the third with a two-out, RBI double by Matt Elliott.

A leadoff error in the top of the sixth inning set up a two-run home run for Derek Dibbens. Newton put runners at second and third with no outs in the bottom of the sixth but managed just one run on an Andrew Revall sacrifice fly. Park City added a run in the seventh. Newton put a base runner on with one out, but a double play ended the game.

Cory Underhill finished the game two for three for Newton. Starting pitcher Tony Pryor took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Park City’s Wade Morrison went 5 2-3 innings for the win, allowing two runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout. Morgan Combs pitched the seventh for the save. Bob Donley went two for four for the Rangers.

Newton opened the second game with a runner at third and no outs in the bottom of the second inning, but a foul out and two strikeouts left the runner stranded. In the bottom of the third, Joey Mendoza walked, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on an Elliott single.

A walk and a single in the top of the fifth led to a Park City run.

Newton loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth. The runner at third was picked off, and a strikeout ended the inning.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Mendoza and Elliott hit back-to-back singles. Mendoza went to third on a Cory Underhill grounder that put out Elliott at second. Revall hit a chopper the Park City catcher fired over the first baseman’s head, scoring Mendoza and ending the game.

Kyle Cremers went the distance for Newton, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out 10. Mendoza finished two for three with both runs scored. Elliott finished two for four.

Combs pitched the seventh for Park City, taking the loss in relief of Sam Pieczynski, who allowed six hits, two walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

Results of Sunday’s games at Salina have not been reported at press time. Newton plays Thursday through Saturday at the El Dorado Broncos Invitational. Newton opens play at 6 p.m. Thursday against Springfield, followed by Denver at 1 p.m. Friday. Newton plays El Dorado at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, followed by Park City at 9 p.m.
