The Newton Junior Knights American Legion baseball team was competitive against the Wichita Sox in a Sunday doubleheader at Klein-Scott Field but couldn’t get over the hump.

The Sox swept the twinbill 4-3 and 12-6. The games originally were scheduled to be played at Wichita Collegiate’s field, but heavy rains late Friday and Saturday morning left that field unplayable. Wichita remained the home team for the twinbill.

Newton had strong pitching in the first game and strong defense in both games but were inconstant at the plate, getting outhit 17-9.

“Our pitching was OK today,” Newton manager Ken Rickard said. “Collin Rupp did a great job in the first game throwing strikes. Offensively, we have to come out hitting. We have to score any way we can. We have to move runners when they are on base. We had a lot of opportunities in game one. Coach (Trent) Nesmith does a good job with that team. They play solid baseball.”

In the first game, a Newton error in the bottom of the first led to two Wichita runs. A Wichita error in the top of the second gave the Junior Knights a run.

Two hits and two errors in the top of the sixth gave Newton two runs and the lead. Wichita came back with RBI doubles for Kody Kaufman and Lance King in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead.

Cooper Rowe and Kaufman had two hits each for Wichita. Starting pitcher Jacob Smith carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning but finished with a no-decision. Dalton Cobb finished the game with the win, striking out three of the four batters he faced.

Newton starter Collin Rupp was the hard-luck loser, allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. Cody Opland had two RBIs. Colton Hege scored two runs.

Wichita took the lead in the first inning of the second game, scoring three runs on three singles with three walks. Aided by four walks, Newton scored three runs in the top of the second.

Wichita regained the lead with a run in the bottom of the second and three runs in the third. The Sox added two more in the fourth inning.

A pair of errors with two outs in the top of the fifth led to three Knight runs. Wichita used four hits in the bottom of the inning to reply.

“I was pleased after we got down a little bit that we came back,” Rickard said. “We were able to put some things together. Hopefully, we’ll try to keep trying to shore things up. If we keep getting good defense and good pitching, our hitting should catch up.”

Sam Beham went three for three hitting for Wichita in the second game, scoring two runs and driving in three. Lance King went two for four. Cobb had two RBIs. Drew von Ehren Krook pitched the win for Wichita. Beham pitched the last two innings.

Newton starter Brandon Palmer took the loss. Opland and Mike Kelly finished. Rupp went two for four hitting.

Newton falls to 5-15. The Junior Knights host McPherson at 6 p.m. Thursday. Newton swept McPherson earlier this season on the road.

“They are about like us,” Rickard said. “They should be a good test for us.”
