Things weren’t looking good for the Newton Senior Knights in the second game of an American Legion doubleheader against the Salina Falcons Wednesday at Klein-Scott Field.

After losing the first game 9-5, the Knights were down 7-0 after 1 1/2 innings with the strong possibility of a run-rule loss looming. Newton was able to get the bats going to outscore Salina 11-1 in the remaining innings for an 11-8 win, salvaging a split.

“It was a better second game,” Newton manager Mark George said. “In the first game, the pitcher they threw, I felt we should have gotten on pretty early. We shouldn’t have waited about two times through the lineup before we knocked him out of the game. They brought in a pretty solid reliever. He was hitting spots and throwing two pitches for strikes. We’ve been in a little rut since we got back from Arkansas City (a tournament win for Newton). We didn’t play to our capabilities against Hutch. We didn’t play to our capabilities against McPherson. Today, we didn’t play to our capabilities. Hopefully, we’ll get back to playing better baseball.

“It’s got to start for us on the bump. When we get good pitching, we do OK. That first game, our defense didn’t let us down, even though we had one error that cost us some runs. We were decent hitting. Anytime opposing hitters get in the box, and the only thing you can get over the plate is a fastball, then the hitter is at an advantage. The second game, we got a better effort from Cody Arellano and Alex Koerner, keeping them off balance.”

In the first game, with bases loaded and one out, the Knights got out of a jam with a double play. Salina got a run in the second inning and another in the third.

The Knight offense broke out with two outs in the bottom of the third. Lee Voth-Gaeddert hit a two-run double. Jordy Bonczyk followed with a single to score Voth-Gaeddert.

Salina came back in the fourth with three runs on three hits and three walks. Ethan Vinson had a two-run double. Three hits in the fifth gave Salina two more runs.

Adam Esau hit an RBI single for Newton in the bottom of the fifth.

Salina scored two runs in the top of the seventh, aided by an error.

Levi Debold went three for three for Salina, scoring three runs. Wyatt Hall went two for five with two runs scored and two RBIs. Vinson went two for four with two RBIs.

Voth-Gaeddert went two for three for Newton with two runs and two driven in. Koerner went two for three.

Tanner Vinson got the win for Salina. Evan Freeman pitched the last four outs for the save. Gabe Lujano took the loss for Newton, the second of four Knight pitchers used.

Salina used three singles in the first inning of the second game to score two runs. With two outs in the second inning, Salina picked up five runs on five hits with a walk and two errors.

Newton came back with five runs in the bottom of the second with two outs. Evan Thomas had a two-run double. Alex Koerner and Voth-Gaeddert each had an RBI single.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Koerner hit a two-run single, followed by a two-run homer by Thomas, giving Newton the lead.

A.J. Farmer hit a solo shot for Salina in the top of the fourth. Newton used a pair of singles to open the bottom of the fourth to get the run back. Voth-Gaddert hit an RBI single for Newton with two outs in the fifth.

Koerner finished the game three for four hitting with three runs scored and three RBIs. Voth-Gaeddert finished three for four with a run scored and two RBIs. Thomas finished two for four with two runs scored and four RBIs. Jesse Jerde finished two for four.

Koerner got the win in relief of Arellano. Koerner held Salina scoreless in 3 1-3 innings with two hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

Farmer finished three for four with two runs scored and three RBIs. Hall went three for five with two runs scored. Conner Martin went two for four with two runs scored and an RBI. Freeman went two for four with two RBIs.

Seth Myers took the loss in relief of Martin.

“We hit the ball better,” George said. “When we got down 7-0, we could have packed it away. I told them I wanted them to chip away. Let’s hold them on defense. I wasn’t expecting five runs with two outs in the bottom of the second. We had an incredible approach at the plate. We were looking for the fastball — driving a pitch. We were spraying it all over. Hopefully, this will give us some confidence down the stretch.”

Newton is 12-6. Salina wins the regular-season series with Newton 3-1. Newton splits its third straight twinbill.

The Knights’ game scheduled for today has been canceled. Original opponent Andover pulled out to play in a tournament. McPherson was contacted as a replacement but couldn’t field a full squad.

Newton hosts the Hutchinson Colts at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Newton and Hutchinson split last week in Hutchinson.

“We’ll be able to come out and have a good practice,” George said. “We’ll come out and hit. We’ll work on some things pitching-wise. I don’t like the break, but it is what it is. ... We’ll be good to go. Our pitchers will get plenty of rest. We want to get them back to be fundamentally sound. We want to get their mechanics down.”
