After more than 30 years of collecting depression glass, Donovan Schmidt and his, wife Deloris, decided it was time to lighten their load and share the collection with others who enjoy the Depression-era table service pieces made of glass.

The couple will open DonDel Antiques at 119 Main St. in Walton today.

For Schmidt, collecting the Depression glass began about 30 years ago when he refinished a large cabinet and was deciding what to put in it.

“I decided I wanted to put in something like the pink glass my mother once had,” he said.

After some research, Schmidt found that pink glass was American Sweetheart Depression glass.

“From there, the collecting blossomed,” he said.

So now, more than 30 years later, the couple has decided to free up some space in their basement and allow other collectors to enjoy many of the pieces they have found over the years.

“It’s time to let someone else enjoy it,” he said.

At DonDel Antiques, they will specialize in Depression glass but will have a variety of other antiques as well.

Toys, kitchen items, carnival glass pieces, sheet music and other items also can be found in the former C-Store in Walton.

The grand opening will be celebrated from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. today and from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Normal operating hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The store will be closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Over the years of collecting and researching depression glass, the Schmidts become member of the National Depression Glass Association.

Schmidt said not only will they be selling items they have collected over the years, but also are willing to purchase items others are wanting to part with.

“Through being a member of the national association, I am a certified dealer of depression glass and can give value estimates and appraisals,” Schmidt said.
