Authorities in north-central Kansas are assessing damage after at least one tornado and powerful winds wiped out homes and businesses.

Sheriff’s deputies in Jewell and Republic counties early Friday reported no serious injuries. A Jewell County dispatcher said the Thursday night storms destroyed a trucking company and a cafe in the town of Jewell, toppled a water tower and wiped out at least one home. A few minor injuries were reported.

At least six homes in Republic County were heavily damaged by a tornado that hit a rural area at 9:50 p.m. County emergency management manager Raymond Raney said some residents were stranded in their damaged homes but were rescued by midnight.

Phillips County also reported a roof blown off a barn, power lines down and trees uprooted in the storms.
