Authorities in north-central Kansas are assessing damage after at least one tornado and powerful winds wiped out homes and businesses.Sheriff’s deputies in Jewell and Republic counties early Friday reported no serious injuries. A Jewell County dispatcher said the Thursday night storms destroyed a trucking company and a cafe in the town of Jewell, toppled a water tower and wiped out at least one home. A few minor injuries were reported. At least six homes in Republic County were heavily damaged by a tornado that hit a rural area at 9:50 p.m. County emergency management manager Raymond Raney said some residents were stranded in their damaged homes but were rescued by midnight. Phillips County also reported a roof blown off a barn, power lines down and trees uprooted in the storms.
