The Wichita Wingnuts opened an American Association homestand against the Sioux Falls Canaries with an 8-1 win Tuesday at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Wichita, 12-7, broke open the game with a six-run third inning. David Gates had a two-run hit in the inning and scored when he stole home. Felipe Del Rosario hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Gustavo Mata, 2-1, allowed a run in the first inning and held Sioux Falls scoreless for the next six to pick up the win. Mata allowed a run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

Stephen Pearson went two for three hitting for Wichita. Heath Keel, Blake Gailen and Gates each went two for four.

Beau Torbert, Will Smith and Patrick Reilly each went two for four for Sioux Falls, 9-8. Starter Ben Moore, 2-2, took the loss for the Canaries.

The two teams play again at 7:05 p.m. today.

MOHR MOVES UP — Wichita outfielder Dustin Mohr was signed Tuesday by the Colorado Rockies and assigned to the Class AAA Colorado Springs Sky Sox of the Pacific Coast League.

Mohr was hitting .209 with Wichita, but was second on the team with 13 RBIs. Mohr has 504 games of Major League experience, spending the 2005 season with Colorado and Colorado Springs, hitting 17 home runs with the Rockies. He played seven games with Tampa Bay last season.
